MCP Manager alternatives compared for MCP access in 2026

Want to choose which tools your AI apps may call, inspect the data they exchange, or both? Compare MCP Manager alternatives by the controls you actually need, plus setup and cost.

By the Toolstile team. Reviewed .

We make Toolstile, one of the products listed here, and compared each option on the same criteria (where it runs, how each AI app gets access, how accounts and sign-in work, what gets logged and what it costs) using public documentation and pricing rather than hands-on testing of every product. How we evaluated

The comparison below covers what a team leaving MCP Manager has to decide: hosting, per-agent access, accounts and sign-in, logging, cost and the work left with you. Facts come from MCP Manager's public documentation and pricing on the dates under sources. We ran no benchmarks and gave no scores.

Where MCP Manager is strong

  • PII filtering with regex rules from Plus, Presidio detection from Professional and custom rule engines on Enterprise.
  • Tool provisioning, teams, roles and OAuth enforcement.
  • Remote MCP servers on every plan; local MCP server support is listed on Enterprise.

What to weigh with MCP Manager

  • SSO, SCIM and compliance logging are listed on Enterprise, which is priced on request.
  • Filtering needs configuration and validation against the actual data formats.
  • Do not equate a governance feature list with compliance for a particular workload.

Choose MCP Manager or Toolstile?

Stay with MCP Manager if

  • Requests or responses must be filtered for PII before an agent sees them. 3
  • You need local MCP servers behind the same gateway as remote ones, on the Enterprise plan. 4
  • HIPAA-compliant logging, a BAA or long log retention is required. 4

Choose Toolstile if

  • Blocking or approving named tools is enough, and record-level limits live upstream. 1
  • A free or $29 workspace is the right entry point for a pilot. 54
  • Members contribute accounts and pick a preferred approved account. 7

Where Toolstile fits

Managed remote MCP accessOur product

Make shared access explicit for each client

If your MCP Manager project is about who can use team tools, Toolstile provides direct grants and overriding blocks. Approving a contributed account does not automatically authorize every member’s agents to use it.

  • Separate account availability from client capability grants.
  • Keep a selected upstream identity instead of automatic fallback.
  • Review activity metadata with payload capture off by default.
Best for
Teams sharing remote MCP tools across their existing AI apps.
Good fit
You can enforce record-level restrictions upstream and need a managed gateway for public HTTPS servers.
Trade-off
Toolstile does not provide PII filtering, custom data rules, HIPAA logging or a compliance certification.

Switching from MCP Manager to Toolstile

  1. Inventory active gateway rules, PII filters, identity enforcement and local server dependencies before moving a connection.
  2. Choose a public HTTPS server whose upstream account already has the required data restrictions; do not remove a necessary filtering layer.
  3. Reconnect pilot accounts in Toolstile, approve team contributions and recreate capability access with named allows and explicit blocks.
  4. Check allowed and denied calls using non-sensitive test data, confirm metadata and debug settings, then revoke the old gateway path only for workflows whose controls are preserved.

Frequently asked questions

Does Toolstile redact PII from tool responses?

No PII-filtering service is claimed. Debug captures have limited automatic credential redaction, which is different from filtering live tool responses. Use provider restrictions or a documented filtering product when sensitive fields must be removed.

What can I evaluate on Toolstile Free?

Free includes 5,000 operations per month for eligible workspaces. You can connect public remote MCP servers, give each client direct capability grants, share approved team accounts and inspect activity metadata. Reusable policies require a paid plan; custom management roles require Team or Scale.

Sources517
Can I move a workstation MCP server to Toolstile?

Not as a local process or private URL. Toolstile requires a public HTTPS MCP endpoint on port 443. Keep the workstation integration on an appropriate local or hosted gateway until an acceptable remote server exists.

Sources24
Does either gateway make our workload compliant automatically?

A product feature list is not a workload assessment. MCP Manager advertises governance and filtering features; Toolstile offers SSO and SCIM on Scale but makes no DLP or compliance-certification claim. Match contractual and technical requirements directly.

Sources642
Will every team agent gain access after account approval?

No. Toolstile approval makes the account available, while each agent authorization still needs a grant. Grants cover all approved accounts on that shared MCP entry, so review account selection as well as tool access.

Other MCP Manager alternatives

Our recommendation

Choose Toolstile for explicit team access to existing public remote servers. Retain MCP Manager or evaluate Mintive, Runlayer and Obot when content filtering, directory lifecycle or local server support is a requirement. Confirm Enterprise features in the commercial quote.

Decide which tools each AI app may use

Free; paid from $29/workspace/month. USD, monthly per workspace, no per-seat fee: Free 5,000 operations; Starter $29 for 50,000; Team $99 for 250,000; Scale $299 for 1,000,000. No paid overages: forwarding stops at the allowance. Tool calls, resource reads and prompt requests count, including upstream failures; listing tools does not. Provider and AI-client charges are separate.
